The Future of Ukrainian and Russian National Football Teams

After the glorious run of Ukraine in the world cup, all the way to the quaterfinals, the main question is, what is next?

Shevchenko has not been playing his best lately, with a slow start in his debut in the premiership for Chelsea, but has scored 2 goals in his last 2 games, including two great feeds to teammate Droga in their last game. He will be 34 next time around for the world cup, by then what impact, if any, can he have in the international world cup, or even the euro 2008.

This of course depends if Russia (2-2) and Ukraine qualify for the Euro 2008. Both are in a tough group, and only the top 2 from each group will go into the finals. Russia beat Macedonia today, 2-0, and are battling for the top two spot with England, Croatia, Israel, Macedonia, Estonia, and Andorra.

Ukraine (2-1) is struggling, and is in a very tough group. Their group includes the top 2 european teams in the world, France and Italy.

There is great talent on both sides, especially forward Artem Milevsky who currently plays for Dynamo Kyiv.

I think what is next is that Ukraine will continue to expand it's football program, while Russia will probably not. When you have your coach promise to take a shot of vodka if the team qualifies, you know that times are desperate, while Ukraine has to look up to national football hero Oleg Blokhin.
